Project Description

Delatim delivered a package of enabling, structural and demolition works as part of the Harrods Power Resilience project at the iconic Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, London.

The wider project involved the removal of life-expired boilers and their replacement with new, more energy-efficient equipment. Delatim’s works were undertaken within the Level -1 basement, an operational area containing critical infrastructure serving the Harrods estate.

Our scope centred on preparing the basement for the new installations, including the structural infilling of existing boiler service trenches, construction of new padstones to support lifting beam upgrades and the controlled demolition of an existing office.

A key challenge was delivering the works within a fully operational luxury retail environment. Harrods and the adjacent Prada Café remained open throughout, requiring detailed logistics, carefully controlled concrete pours and pedestrian management to ensure the works had no adverse impact on customers or day-to-day operations.

Scope of Works

The works included:

• Enabling works to facilitate the replacement of existing life-expired boilers.
• Structural infilling of existing boiler service trenches.
• Installation of void formers, steel angles and profiled steel sheeting.
• Scabbling and preparation of existing trench walls.
• Drilling and installation of new structural dowel bars.
• Installation of reinforcement prior to concrete placement.
• Placement of approximately 60m³ of pumped structural concrete across two separate pours.
• Breaking out existing structures and installation of new padstones for lifting beam upgrade works.
• Controlled demolition of existing Room 59 within the basement.
• Installation of a crash deck beneath the demolition area.
• Management of construction logistics through restricted basement access routes.
• Temporary pedestrian management and protection of the public during concrete operations.
• Removal of demolition waste through the Harrods service infrastructure.
